2022 FIESTA POSTER

Every year, the city of Santa Barbara celebrates its Spanish heritage with a
week-long festival in August known as "Old Spanish Days Fiesta". It is custom that a p
oster and pin are created to reflect the chosen theme of that current year. This year, I was given the honor of designing the 2022 Fiesta poster
which was unveiled May 21, 2022 at the La Primavera event in Santa Barbara, CA.

INSPIRATION

Traditional Ranchero

The Old Spanish Days (OSD) board wanted this year's poster to be more traditional and reminiscent of the Ranchero Period (1830-1865), which is commemorated with their annual celebration. My typeface combines an old-western aesthetic with delicate detailing to honor the Ranchero period and to match the feminine energy of the 2022 Fiesta pin. Hints of old-western influence can be found in the thick stems and triangular divots incised from the bottom and tops of the letters. The high thick-to-thin stroke contrast, rounded serifs, and delicate cut-out patterns add a touch
of femininity to the typeface.

Fans and Roses

During OSD Fiesta, it is typical for festival-goers and
Flamenco dancers alike to wear roses in their hair, or to carry Spanish fans. The lattice-pattern on the poster and typeface is derived from the ornate patterning of these fans. The rose graphics on the poster contribute to the composition's feminine look and feel.

PROCESS

The Poster

For the poster's main image, La Presidente Maria Cabrera
of the OSD board chose a water color
painting of Fiesta Pequena, created by Arthur Beaumont. A vibrant orange
hue was chosen for the poster to convey a bright and
positive atmosphere amidst the heaviness and dread of
the pandemic. As the poster evolved into the final version,
I simplified the details of the typeface to keep the focus on
the poster's main image, and to avoid making the composition overly busy.

Lettering

In order to create the custom typefaces on this poster, I used Ivy Presto Text as a base. From
there I altered the typeface by adding new
serifs, increasing the thickness of the stems, and subtracting shapes and patterns from the letters.
